Thursday, Mar 7- Non-fiction reading assignment- Before you read...

Bellringer:
On page 53 type pages 11, 12 and 13

What are we learning today?
With the new English Common Core standards,
students are required to read non-fiction documents
in ALL of their classes and understand them.
We are going to discuss some steps
on how to make a non-fiction document easier to understand.

1. Always "preview" a document by looking at the Titles and pictures.
Let's look at the article "Importance of PowerPoint Skills" (click on link)
What is the main title?
What are the 3 subtitles?
What do you think the article is going to be about?
Ask yourself what do you ready know about the topic, PowerPoint?

Name 5 things you know about PowerPoint.

2. You need to get use to reading a non-fiction text at least 2 times!
The first time is a quick read to get a "big" picture about what the article is about.
The second time is a slower read to understand what the article is about.

Get into groups of 2 or 3 students.
Each group will be assigned a paragraph to read to get the "big" picture.
As close as possible to 10 words explain what your paragraph is about on the yellow sheet of paper on the walls. Do NOT copy from your paragraph.
It needs to be in your own words.

3. Look up any words you do not know. When you go to http://www.google.com type the word
DEFINITION and the word you want to look up.
For example question number one says to look at
the word “synonymous” on Google and write the definition.
You would type definition synonymous”.

Do NOT use the word synonymous in your definition.
Some words have more than one definition
so you need to check that it makes sense in the article’s sentence
.

4. On a new piece of paper answer the 21 questions on the Green sheet.
Notice that the questions give you the paragraph, where you can find the answers.

Exit Activities:
1. If you were absent on Tuesday, Go to Spreadsheet vocabulary game.
By yourself or with a partner take turns and play
http://www.quia.com/hm/174125.html?AP_rand=933500499&playHTML=1

You need to complete the questions until it says 100%
raise your hand for the teacher to see 100% completed and
write down the score, you will not be graded.
(It can’t be saved)
There is a pink vocabulary guide between every desk!

2. Many of you did not get finished watching and voting on the PowerPoint Projects, that you liked, or completing your review worksheet.
Pull up Edmodo
For each category pick the best PowerPoint
AND answer
the Voting questions on the worksheet:

Why do you like the project you voted for?
What is the design evidence? (liked animation, font, colors, easy to understand, etc.)

What one thing will you change on your PowerPoint and why?
