Tuesday, March 11- Functions are Formula Shortcuts

Bellringer
We are learning the number keypad. Click on http://www.typeonline.co.uk/number_pad_lesson1.html
Choose exercise 1 and then click on the word “start.”
Time will not start until you put your cursor in the white rectangle and start typing.
Record your typing speed and accuracy on a piece of paper.

What are we learning today?
How to use functions
4.3 Know Spreadsheet operations

EQ: How are functions different than formulas?
Functions are shortcuts for typing formulas.
You do not need to type as many items in functions compared to formulas.
For example:  =F2+F3+F4+F5  is the same as =Sum(F2:F5)

Guided Exercises:

Open Flashcard 19- hide worksheet
Open Flashcard 32 calculates average.

Open a new Excel spreadsheet

Open the Understanding Functions Word document

It is important to understand the parts of a function (equals sign, function name, parentheses, beginning of the range, colon, ending of the range and parenthese).

We will type out a formula =F2+F3+F4+F5 and then we type out function to see how functions are shortcuts. =Sum(F2:F5)
Open up the "Functions goes with youtube" file.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3q1ch-Cgto

Open up the Hurricane file.
Class practice of Hurricane sheet using  functions
We are going to practice inserting the following FUNCTIONS or shortcuts:
Sum- adds all of the numbers in a range
Max- finds the largest number in a range
Min- finds the lowest number in a range
Average- calculates the average of a range of numbers
Count- counts the numbers of entries in a range

Independent Activity:
Open up your car lot file. Insert the functions sum, max, min and average.
