Wednesday, March 5h- 8th Grade- Databases- Which field type should you use?

Bellringer:
1. Open your Typing file and on page 31 type lines 4, 5, and 6.            

    Use your left INDEX finger for the B  key exercise.
2. If your name is on the board, finish your first name database.

What are we learning?
Understand the basics of databases.
How is database information used, organized, and managed in business?

Wednesday take Interim Reports Home to be signed. 




Guided Practice:

@ Students will open in the DATABASE folder
     the 1 Database Fundamentals PowerPoint



@ What is your favorite movie?
     We are going to look at the Internet Movie Database http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240772/
     as we watch the following video.
@ What is a database? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-bvjtYgRVU
start at 1:10 explains relationships to 5:30

@ Class will practice identifying tables and records, fields, and entries.
@ Class will discuss the difference between text and number data field types.

 Independent Lesson:
@ Complete the IMDB worksheet
@ Continue the Review of Database Tables worksheet.
Use slide 18 to help with the field type definitions.

Please remember you only use the Numbers field if you want to calculate something.
 
@ Complete the "What is a database?" question by copying the
     ENTIRE definition from slide 1 at the beginning of the PowerPoint


 If time,
Go to http://www.expedia.com/
Students will start on airline database worksheet.
Miss W will walk through how to gather data for the first example.

Homework- Extra Credit for 3rd test:
Ask your parents if they have a business card or 
have one in their wallets from a business or 
have a friend with a business card or the next
time you go into a business or they go into a 
business see if they have a business card or
at home go to Google and then images and 
type

"business card" then print a business card.
If you give Miss W a business card sometime
this week you will get 5 points extra credit on 
the second test. MUST be appropriate for school- 
no alcohol, guns or bad words on cards.
