What are we learning?
Understand the basics of databases.
How is database information used, organized, and managed in business?
What formatting options are available when creating databases?

Guided Lesson:
Who has the world's largest database?

The National Security Agency has the world's largest database.
The NSA's responsibilities include  "global monitoring, collection,
decoding, translation and analysis of information and data for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes."http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Security_Agency

Intelligence gathering has occurred throughout history.
New word "query"- A database query is a piece of code (a query) that is sent to a database in order to get information back from the database. Queries can be saved.
You can also "filter" information in a database to find information that meets certain conditions, such as all students, who are older than 13 years old.

Independent Activity:
@ In groups of 2 or 3 (two groups may have 3 people) students will read a paragraph from the article "N.S.A Gathers Data on Social Connections of U.S. Citizens" from
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/29/us/nsa-examines-social-networks-of-us-citizens.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0.

@ In their own words, students will write a 10 to 15 word sentence about what their paragraph is about and share with class.

@ Students will read the entire article and answer questions.

@ Students will create a group PowerPoint about the NSA

Exit Activity:

CIA code breaking

1st period- code 1 and code 2
2nd period- code 2

The first database test will be on these questions.

http://www.quia.com/rr/956502.html
There are some questions we have not covered yet.

To put data in a particular order is to sort.
Ascending is small to large, A-Z order.
Descending is large to small, Z-A order.
Two examples of connector words are OR and AND.
A feature that displays records that meet one or more specific
criteria or condition is called a filter or query.
